CMI: Employee morale is still low
Date: 28/04/2010
Employee morale in the UK is still struggling in the face of renewed business difficulties despite the upturn in the UK economy, according to a new report from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).
A survey of nearly 900 bosses across the British Isles discovered that around two in five said their company was hit particularly hard by the effects of the recession in terms of morale as well as finances, underlining the importance of incentives and recognition in the workplace.
The study's author Lord John Eatwell, who serves as the chief economic adviser to the CMI, said that while the economy is growing "albeit at an anaemic 0.2 per cent", the promise of better times ahead for business is not enough to sustain struggling firms in the short-term.
"Practical help and support is urgently needed. Managers are integral to driving our recovery, but their efforts are being hampered by a lack of available finance and poor levels of employee morale. If they are to turn the situation around, then Government help is urgently required."
The CMI oversees the interests of over 86,000 individual members, promoting high standards of leadership across the country.
