CIPD: Workplace sustainability must be communicated

Date: 16/11/2009

A leading organisation has shown that communication needs to be improved in the workplace if sustainability is to be further promoted.

While over nine in ten respondents included regular team building conferences as the main activity to sustain organisations, only 63 per cent carry this practice out, according to the new survey by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

Furthermore, objective setting is seen as important by 85 per cent, though only three-quarters of respondents actually carry it out.

Angela Baron, the engagement adviser at the CIPD, said that performance management helps people understand their contributions to the strategic goals of firms and makes sure that skills and effort are focused on important growth, underlining the need for team building conferences.

She continued: "At its best it is a tool to ensure that line managers effectively manage the people they are responsible for and in line with organisational objectives and goals."

The CIPD is Europe's largest human resource development professional body with over 135,000 members.
