CIPD claims flexible working could 'boost employee motivation'

Date: 04/08/2010

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has claimed that flexibility could be the key to ensuring employees stay motivated.

According to CIPD, employers should be flexible not just in terms of where people carry out their roles, but in what roles people actually do for a firm.

The organisation suggested that employee motivation amongst older staff is just as important.

Mike Emmott, public policy advisor at the CIPD, said that, as the retirement age disappears from employment legislation, companies will have to ensure they maintain engagement amongst older workers.

"We certainly are seeing an increase in the numbers of older workers choosing to work for longer," he said.

He added: "[As a result] there will need to be more flexibility because it is not just flexibility in working times, but flexibility about the sort of jobs people do."

According to research from HSBC, 15 per cent of over-50s have changed their career path because they wanted to do something new.
