Businesses need to prioritise employee motivation, says expert

Date: 10/12/2010

Businesses need to prioritise employee motivation and staff rewards, according to an expert.

Michael Rendell, head of HR at PricewaterhouseCoopers, has highlighted the fact that staff morale has taken a hit since the recession, as employees are worked harder sometimes for less pay or rewards.

This advice comes after a recent survey showed that UK workers are the most disengaged in Europe, revealing their lack of motivation.

The research, by Hay Group, found that 29 per cent of staff are disengaged, defined as "unwilling to go the extra mile for their firms".

And Mr Rendell offered employers advice about how to tackle this.

"For organisations to meet their headcount targets, retaining employees will be just as important as finding new hires," he said.

He added that businesses should decide on rewards and recognitions that will let staff know they are appreciated and therefore increase morale.
