Businesses 'may overlook' morale issues

Date: 20/01/2010

Effective human resources are necessary to run a business, yet with such a focus on money and profitability in the current climate, a number of organisations may find themselves taking their eye off the ball, it has been explained.

Personnel Today spoke to a number of experts in the field to get their take on the trends currently facing organisations up and down the country, with the general consensus being that many may take their sights away from what is really important: their workers.

Julie Armstrong, the HR director at Manchester Airport, said that she saw it as understandable that this key demographic has been affected by the economic recession.

"But the danger is that there are people challenges to address - and will be for some time - such as retention, motivation, and tax and pensions changes," she continued.

Ms Armstrong added that without incentives and recognition and other key motivators, businesses may not have the human resources staff needed to deal with them and as such, organisations could "struggle to retain their competitive edge".

Legal problems aside, businesses should take employee complaints seriously or there could be a huge drop in morale, according to Rich Meneghello of the Daily Journal of Commerce.
