Business leaders 'must manage sickness effectively'
Date: 13/01/2009
Bosses at companies across the country should speak to their employees after they return from an illness in an attempt to make them feel missed by the company, it has been said.
As a way of motivating employees, bosses should use such a staff recognition programme when a workmate is ill as otherwise they may not feel the urge to work when they return as it could result in them feeling undervalued, according to the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas).
Head of good practice services at Acas Gill Trevelyan stated that the current climate highlighted the need for this preparation.
She said that having a significant number of employees absent from work "can make it difficult for the business to function effectively and also put pressure on employees who are still at work".
Ms Trevelyan added: "Planning for an increased level of sickness at this time of year is important."
According to a recent survey by FirstCare, bosses were also encouraged to make workers take breaks as a way of motivating employees.
