Bullying 'must be central target' of morale initiative

Date: 22/03/2010

Whether a workplace is using corporate events management or incentives and recognition to improve morale in the workplace, organisations must be sure to target bullying, it has been underlined.

Despite high-pressure and competitive working environments, bullying "can often be disregarded", said Sally Anne-Ogilvie of the Press & Journal, though if an employee is being subjected to undue pressure, derogatory comments or abuse, action must be taken.

She said that when bullying is rife, staff morale will always be low and sickness absence rates and staff turnover will continue to peak, in turn having a "serious and detrimental impact on the performance and productivity of a business".

Ms Ogilvie concluded: "Eliminating all forms of harassment and bullying from the workplace therefore makes good business sense."

Brendan Barber, the general secretary of the TUC, recently maintained that unions are still important in such issues as bullying in the workplace.
