Bosses warned that reducing focus on employee motivation can be 'fatal'

Date: 31/01/2011

UK bosses have been warned that reducing focus on employee engagement can be 'fatal' for organisations in the current economic climate.

According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), with organisations' liquidity being limited it can be tempting to put employee engagement on the backburner and rely on fear among the workforce to act as a motivator.

However, speaking at a panel discussion, the CIPD's research adviser, Jill Miller, told HR Magazine that this kind of 'forced' motivation is not enough.

"Having that sort of forced engagement is not great. If HR took that view it could be fatal," she said.

"When things do pick up those people who are just working hard because of job losses are going to be out the door straight away.

Ms Miller added that it is a "short-term mentality" which will not hold up when good times return.

The Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals recently suggested boosting employee motivation with alternative forms of incentives and recognition while money is short.
