Bosses need to be 'happy to help'
Date: 25/01/2010
Bosses need to do more in the way of creating a good working culture, according to a new report, and this means that they must be happy to help.
John Kamensky, a senior fellow with the IBM Center for the Business of Government as well as a fellow of the National Academy for Public Administration, referenced a report published recently by the Harvard Business Review, which underlined the role of management in motivating workers.
He noted that Teresa Amabile, the Edsel Bryant Ford professor of business administration at the school, had perhaps the best point of all: management should take great care to clarify goals in environments such as team building conferences to "cultivate a culture of helpfulness".
She continued: "While you're at it, you can facilitate progress in a more direct way: roll up your sleeves and pitch in. Of course, all these efforts will not only keep people working with gusto but also get the job done faster."
A recent oneDrum.com survey concluded that by allowing more people to work from home and support them through technology, bosses can boost morale in the workplace.
