Following the Gulf of Mexico Deepwater Horizon oil disaster, which killed 11 workers and leaked millions of barrels of crude oil into the sea, BP has announced that it is introducing a safety-based reward and recognition programme.
The firm has said that its fourth quarter bonuses will be based entirely on safety issues and safety performance.
BP's chief executive officer Bob Dudley, who has been attempting to clean up the oil giant's image after the disaster, said the new reward and recognition incentive was designed to send a clear message that safety is now a top priority at the firm.
He claimed that the new bonus incentives would ensure that "a low-probability, high-impact incident such as the Deepwater Horizon tragedy never happens again".
"The key to achieving that goal is the rigorous identification and management of every risk we face," he added.
The cost of the Deepwater Horizon disaster stands at £7 billion.
