BBC to see boost in employee motivation as it reaches pension agreement?

Date: 02/12/2010

The BBC may see an upturn in employee motivation, as it has reached an agreement with union members over pensions.

Journalists from the BBC staged strikes in November after the broadcaster said it could be capping increases in pensionable pay at one per cent to help it to reduce a £1.5 billion pension deficit.

An offer made in early November was rejected, as it would mean that staff contributions to pensions would be reduced from seven per cent to six per cent, giving them a career-average benefit pension of four per cent each year.

The offer before this had been just 2.5 per cent career-average pension.

But this week it was announced that an agreement had been met after nine hours of talks.

A statement from the National Union of Journalists said: "Union negotiators met with the BBC and Acas on Tuesday and reached an agreement in principle which will be recommended for acceptance at the meeting on Friday."
