Athletics centre to receive big hospitality boost

Date: 04/02/2009

The British home of athletics, Gateshead International Stadium, is to receive a major boost which could lead to it being a premier host of corporate events in the north-east of England, it has been said.

According to Tony Henderson of the Journal, new facilities will be installed at the stadium just south of Newcastle, which has been earmarked as a possible base for athletes for pre-Olympic Games warm-up sessions in 2012.

The 11,750 seats will all be covered by the end of the development process, with only 3,300 covered at the moment, he stated.

Mr Henderson added that the facility could become a viable place for team building and performance improvement in a corporate hospitality event as the indoor area will be redeveloped to conform to standards demanded by sports events such as the Aviva British Grand Prix.

The local government announced last August that it was aiming to turn the stadium into a sports village for UK athletes.
