Asda has found a novel way to boost employee motivation – by offering onsite fitness classes to its staff.
The scheme is in response to a survey which found that 400 staff members at the company's head office in Leeds would be interested in fitness classes either before or after work.
It puts into practice advice offered by Peter Reilly from the Institute for Employment Studies, who recently advised bosses that reward and recognition schemes should be tailored to individual staff needs.
Staff who want to take part in the classes are offered them at a special rate – just £10 for three sessions.
And so far 90 employees have taken up the offer and have been joining classes at the Tomato Room, an auditorium at its head office.
According to Employment Benefits, Kevin Trott, colleague relations and colleague engagement team leader at Asda, said: "It caters for all fitness levels - those who are new to exercise through to those who are planning to run marathons next year."
