Appreciation is the key to reward and recognition programs

Date: 05/07/2010

Employee motivation is about more than just providing workers with cash rewards and recognition, it has been claimed.

According to sales incentives expert Dave Conrad, the single greatest need for employees is to feel appreciated.

Writing for the Post-Bulletin, Conrad claimed that while employee motivation and performance management is dependent on reward and recognition programs, they do not have to be costly or cash-based.

"A good rewards system recognises and rewards individual and team performance, financially and otherwise, in relation to the overall contribution made," he told the news provider.

Conrad added: "There are many non-financial ways to reward employees."

He noted that it was often beneficial to find out what kind of rewards and sales incentives employees expected before introducing a program.

"Some employees may respond well to recognition of achievement before their peers, while others may find that embarrassing," Conrad concluded.
