Addressing employee motivation 'an important issue'

Date: 26/08/2010

Addressing the problem of poor employee motivation is an extremely important issue that needs to be tackled by human resources (HR) managers.

According to Ruth Spellman, chief executive officer of the Chartered Management Institute, there needs to be a shift in focus towards training and development in the workplace.

Writing for HR Magazine, Mrs Spellman said that companies need to offer tailored training to individual staff members if they are to boost employee motivation and they need to make it clear that up-skilling will benefit staff as well as the business as a whole.

She told the news provider: "There's also likely to be a direct link between employee engagement being at an all-time low in the UK and a proliferation of substandard managers who cannot connect with their staff, recognise their needs and motivate them appropriately."

"This has to change," Mrs Spellman added.

Steve Joyce, head of marketing at Ceridian, recently told Fresh Business Thinking that trust is a key aspect of employee motivation.
