Team building must have leadership if the aim is motivating employees, according to one industry specialist.
Chief executive of Team Builders Plus in the US Jeffrey Backal told the New York Times that a company could invest in all the exercises it wanted but it has to be applied logically by an assertive leader or a corporate event specialist if it is to be successful.
He continued: "The activity is a metaphor and when you talk about the activity you start bringing that back into the workplace.
"You're going to have a more cohesive unit and people are going to get along better and communicate more effectively."
Mr Backal added that the current economic climate was causing many people to become stressed, so managers needed to invest time, money and effort into their employees' morale.
According to Team Technology, integrating outdoor events and ongoing activities in the workplace is a fun and beneficial way to enhance employee morale, with joint break times and relevant "learning lunches" building on worker strengths.
