'Feedback, transparency and recognition' the key to motivation

Feedback, transparency and recognition are some of the primary tools business should use to keep employees motivated.

That is the message from Brian Kristofek, president and chief executive of marketing agency Upshot, which was named as one of the top companies in the US to work for in 2008.

Mr Kristofek told Medill Reports the use of surveys to track employee satisfaction and the development of an "overly social" workplace helped keep people motivated and eager to work.

Citing the importance of the survey's key question – would employees recommend the business as a place to work to their friends – he said it was vital that companies kept staff focussed during difficult times.

Workers will be particularly in need of a lift today given the advent of Blue Monday.

First identified by British scientist Cliff Arnall, formerly of Cardiff University, January 19th is seen as the most depressing day of the year given its distance from Christmas, the likelihood of failed resolutions and the feeling of a need for change.
