We agree with critics when they say that offsetting is no panacea. Reducing carbon
footprint is the most important factor. However, offsetting
the remainder by investing to counteract our impact strikes
us as the right thing to do. Through our partners at Climate Care we can help to fund four main carbon offset project areas.
Climate
Care is an organisation that develops projects overseas to
reduce greenhouse gas emissions on behalf of individuals
and other organisations. It does this through a wide range
of projects including:
Renewable
energy projects
These projects include ‘green’ power such as solar, wind or hydro-electric
energy. Technologies utilising these energies could replace fossil fuel
power generation, leading to reduced emissions. Client funds aid the
development of these technologies.
Bio
energy projects
Plants can be made into a type of renewable fuel called biomass, which
can be burnt to provide energy. When this happens carbon is released,
but if another plant grows in its place there is no overall increase
of CO2 in the atmosphere. Client funds help to finance the development
of these projects.
Forestry
projects worldwide
Trees absorb CO2 to produce wood and release oxygen back into the atmosphere.
Well-managed, long-term forestry makes a significant positive impact
on local communities and towards bio diversity. Client funds help develop
ongoing forestry schemes in many areas of the world.
Energy
efficiency projects
Using efficient energy is vital when moving towards to a low-carbon future.
Projects aimed at promoting the use of energy more effectively - for
example those supporting the use of energy efficient light bulbs - work
to save carbon emissions back at their source. Clients’ funding can guarantee
greater success of these schemes.
